Crawlers and Toddlers

A toddler’s spine is a growing structure made of softer cartilage and bones that develops natural curves as the child learns to sit, stand, and walk. As babies hold up their heads, they create the cervical (neck) curve. When they learn to sit, they begin to form the thoracic (mid back) curve. Finally, as toddlers stand and walk, the lumbar curve is created. These curves are all normal but should be checked by your family chiropractor at each one of those stages.

Unlike an adult’s spine, a baby’s spine is more flexible and vulnerable to certain conditions like scoliosis and spina bifida, which require early diagnosis and treatment to prevent long-term issues with breathing, walking, and overall health. Signs of spinal problems include uneven shoulders, a tilted pelvis, or a hunched back.

What to look for. A crawling child drags a leg, or a toddler who frequently falls to the same side can be indications of subluxations in the pelvis, low back, or even the upper part of the spine. (More information on chiropractic subluxations is available on the back pain page of this website).  These problems are simply treated by gentle chiropractic adjustments.

Middle ear infections. While more prominent in toddlers, middle ear infections (acute otitis media/AOM) are sometimes seen in infants, toddlers and young children. Most ear infections are a result of a viral infection which is often treated with antibiotics yet rarely addresses the actual problem. Additionally, antibiotics kill off the normal bacteria in the gut, which can lead to diaper rash, yeast infections, and diarrhea. If the middle ear infection is related to a structural issue, a simple and gentle chiropractic adjustment can allow the body to quickly heal naturally and help resolve chronic and acute middle ear infections.
