A toddler’s spine is a growing structure made of softer cartilage and bones that develops natural curves as the child learns to sit, stand, and walk. As babies hold up their heads, they create the cervical (neck) curve. When they learn to sit, they begin to form the thoracic (mid back) curve. Finally, as toddlers stand and walk, the lumbar curve is created. These curves are all normal but should be checked by your family chiropractor at each one of those stages.
Unlike an adult’s spine, a baby’s spine is more flexible and vulnerable to certain conditions like scoliosis and spina bifida, which require early diagnosis and treatment to prevent long-term issues with breathing, walking, and overall health. Signs of spinal problems include uneven shoulders, a tilted pelvis, or a hunched back.
